You decide the location, and let us provide the structure and programming for a generative weekend of writing. Once you sign up, you’ll receive a workbook to help you determine your needs and set your agenda, plus a packet of worksheets that you’ll use throughout the weekend.

Your DIY retreat will be anchored by a two-hour workshop each day (QUARRY on Saturday and SCRAPS on Sunday), live on Zoom, led by the Midwives of Invention. Each workshop focuses on one of our most useful writing tools, and includes generative prompts and structured time to connect with other writers. Before and after each live workshop, you will have a schedule that you’ve created in advance with the help of our workbook.

Wait, where is the retreat?

Well that’s up to you, really! You could do it from the comfort of home, or head to a friend’s house, or even snag a cheap hotel room for the weekend and do it there. Anywhere with a Wi-Fi connection (the workshops are on Zoom) and a writing surface. (Yes, you’ll be writing!)

Can I do this with friends?

Yes! Sign up individually and make plans to get away together (in one of your homes or in a third location) for the weekend, or check in with each other digitally as you do the retreat in your own space.

Who are the Midwives of Invention?

You are the mother of invention, and we are your midwives!

Jade and Ann are writers and friends who have been leading workshops as the Midwives of Invention since 2018. Between us we have written best-selling fiction and non-fiction books, published pioneering newsletters, edited magazines, written for beloved television shows, and created podcasts and audio essays. We are not tortured writers toiling alone. We are in constant dialogue with each other about our projects and processes, and we started the Midwives of Invention because we wanted to share that dialogue with the wider world.
