May 22-28, 2023 ~ Taos, NM

Where do you get your ideas? It’s a question that writers hear all the time. But the real question is: How do you develop your ideas?

Find your answer with us, the Midwives of Invention—Jade Chang and Ann Friedman. We've written best-selling books, a Netflix series, a groundbreaking podcast, an iconic weekly newsletter, and a raft of national magazine articles. And, since 2018, we have been leading popular workshops that help writers evolve new ideas and deepen existing ones. Our goal is to help make your practice bigger and weirder and more thoroughly YOU, so you’ll follow through and get the work done.

Join us in New Mexico for a week of creative inspiration and supportive community. We can’t wait to meet you.

The Retreat

A reset. A springboard. A gorgeous, century-old adobe ranch surrounded by fruit trees under the Taos Mountains.

We believe good writing is born at the intersection of getting serious and letting go, of steady structure and joyful chaos. Every impulse that has led you here—your innate curiosity, your sense of narrative, your unique voice, your desire for connection—is a tool that you will learn to use in your writing. And using these tools will reframe your understanding of yourself as an artist.

During our UNSTUCK week, we will meet each day to share our vetted strategies and surprising techniques for strengthening your ideas. You’ll get the behind-the-scenes dirt on our own processes and pitfalls. You’ll also spend time in small groups, building relationships with like-minded writers. And there will be solo hours to dedicate to your project—or start a new one! Evenings will be programmed with intriguing events designed to take you out of writing mode, giving your working brain a delightful break.

Writers have called our past Ideas Workshops “a transformative experience,” “a game changer,” and “the best professional workshop I've ever attended.” Whether you're working on a novel, a screenplay, an essay, a memoir, a newsletter, or an epic song cycle, you’ll leave feeling energized, connected, and clear about what you need to do to bring your words into the world.

Stop waffling and start writing. You are the mother of invention, and we are your midwives.

Develop Your Ideas

This isn’t like other writing workshops. Instead of craft or revision, our UNSTUCK retreat is focused on evolving new ideas—and revamping existing ones—so they are more urgent, more actionable, more exciting. Our exercises, discussions, prompts, and group work will help you:

  • Sift through your broad interests to find concrete projects

  • Tap into your innate curiosity to find new directions for your work

  • Surprise yourself with new approaches to structure and voice

  • Whittle down a huge list of ideas to one that’s most compelling

  • Gain confidence in your internal creative compass

  • Create a personalized workflow so you can actually follow through

Over the course of the week, you will get a step-by-step breakdown of our own idea-development processes, learn about methods that other writers use to strengthen their ideas, and hone your own process for evolving your most promising ideas. Our retreat has a friendly, encouraging, and propulsive dynamic that will get you excited to dig in and do the hard work.

Connect with Other Creative Brains

We’re keeping it intimate. With a maximum of 35 attendees, you’ll make lots of personal connections. We have a conscious framework for small-group work, designed for you to have meaningful interactions with your fellow writers. You will exchange honest feedback, give each other space to be more ambitious, and cheer each other on.

Is there a friend you’ve always wanted to collaborate with? Come together! Or arrive solo and meet kindred creative spirits! Ann and Jade will be leading all of the whole-group sessions and will be present throughout the week.

Get Some Writing Done

Yes, you’re here for our expertise and for the community connection, but with this workshop you are also carving out space in your schedule—and in your life—to focus on your writing. We’ll help you make it count. We’re not interested in just feeling creative. We want you to make a genuine love connection with your idea and follow through on it. That’s why we’re leaving plenty of air in the schedule so you can get the unbroken writing hours you crave, with carefully chosen prompts and exercises you can use if you need a little prodding. We called it UNSTUCK for a reason!

Change Your Perspective

Sometimes it takes a change of scenery to open up new ways of thinking. Nestled in the mountains of northern New Mexico, Taos is a dreamy site for this work. Artists have been coming here for centuries to connect more deeply to themselves and their ideas. In late May, Taos is warm in the afternoons and crisp in the evenings. We might get lucky and catch the seasonal peak wildflower bloom among the sagebrush and creosote.

The Rooms

We have two lodging spaces, the Main Lodge and the Guesthouse, which are across the street from each other. We picked these locations for reasons both impractical (they are gorgeous!) and practical: they have beautiful common areas for gathering as a group, plus many nooks and crannies where you can tuck yourself away to write in solitude. The Main Lodge was originally built as a dude ranch in 1925, and some structures on the site date back to the 1890s. It has a tranquil walking path lined with ancient fruit trees. We’ll have our meals and group sessions in its beautiful adobe dining room with high wood-beam ceilings and warm light. The adjacent Guesthouse, a registered cultural landmark built in the 1940s, is nestled among cottonwood and spruce trees and offers a bit more quiet.

The room prices reflect the total retreat fee:

What’s Included: Accommodations for 6 nights. Daily workshop instruction. All meals, snacks, and drinks.

What is not Included: Flights. Transportation to/from the airport.

We have three lodging options: Premium Singles, Standard Singles, and Shared Rooms. The rooms are all different and feature unique combinations of skylights, seating areas, writing desks, Mexican-tiled bathrooms, patios, and even—romantically!—working fireplaces. Several are ADA accessible. See individual room details for more info.

Premium Singles

Spacious private rooms with swoon-worthy features like fireplaces, patios, and mountain views. Book the exact room you’ll be staying in.

Standard Singles

These rooms tend to be a bit cozier than premium singles, but still offer privacy and lots of charming details. Book the exact room you’ll be staying in.

Shared Rooms

Arriving solo but looking for a roomie ? Attending with a friend? This option is for you. At checkout you’ll answer a few questions, and we’ll pair you with a roommate.

What to Expect

Our week together involves just enough intricate planning to help you make measurable progress with your project (even if you haven’t settled on “the one” yet), and a touch of controlled chaos to ensure your work evolves in surprising ways. When you arrive in Taos on Monday, you’ll find a few surprises in your room designed to help you open up to new possibilities; when you depart on Sunday you will leave with a clear plan of action for your project.

Daily Programming

Every retreat day will be different, but you can always expect a combination of:

  • Workshop session: An expanded breakdown of our ideas development technique, accompanied by exercises designed to help you apply these ideas to your own project. These will be taught by both Ann and Jade and attended by all retreat participants.

  • Breakout groups: Having a creative community has been instrumental to our work. These groups are designed to help you get to know your fellow writers and share ideas across disciplines.

  • Solo writing time: Each solo writing session will give you the chance to test out a productivity tip and/or focus on a particular aspect of your project. All of our prompts and tools are carefully chosen to help you push the bounds of your idea and gain an understanding of your own best work practices.

  • Evening events: Evenings at UNSTUCK are a time to deepen new friendships and take part in unexpected activities. We’re planning a few surprises to help us tap into all sides of our creative brains!

Although we will not be scheduling formal 1:1 sessions, Ann and Jade will be present throughout the week and available to sit down and discuss your project.

Food and Drink

All food and drink, plus gratuity for staff, is included in the price of the retreat. Delicious meals are a priority, and Chef Alanna is going to take excellent care of us. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets are accommodated at all three daily meals. Organic coffee, tea, and seltzer will be available throughout the day. We believe creative work cannot happen without snacks, which will be amply provided.

We will have a limited amount of self-serve wine and beer nightly, as well as some fun non-alcoholic sips. You are also welcome to bring your own and to share with others!

Transportation

You’ll need to make your own transportation arrangements from a nearby airport to our retreat location in Taos. There are three airports in the region:

Taos Regional Airport (SKX)—10 miles away; close enough to take a ride-share car.

Santa Fe Airport (SAF) —100 miles away; domestic flights to/from Dallas/Fort Worth, Phoenix, and Denver.

Albuquerque Sunport (ABQ) —159 miles away; domestic & international flights.

After you reserve your spot, we’ll connect you with other retreat participants in case you want to share rental car costs or coordinate shuttles.

All retreat programming will take place in a single location, so you won’t need your own transportation during the week. If you do bring a car, there will be complimentary parking available on the premises.

About the Midwives

We’re Jade Chang and Ann Friedman, two best-selling authors and national magazine writers who, between us, have put in our 10,000 hours (sorry for Gladwelling) in screenwriting, podcasting, editing, and various entrepreneurial ventures. We are also friends who live in Los Angeles.

And we have way, way too many ideas. We wish we could pursue every single one of them. Alas, we are mortals, so we have to prioritize. We’ve had countless conversations about deepening an idea, shaping a concept so that it feels vital and rich, and knowing when a nascent project is worth the time and effort. Our workshops are about sharing those conversations with you.

[There should be a photo of us here, but we always get distracted by talking to each other and forget to pose for one. Maybe one of you can take a picture of us together in Taos?!]

Jade Chang

Jade’s debut novel, The Wangs vs. the World was named one of the best books of the year by NPR, Elle, and Amazon. She has been invited to discuss the book at colleges (Yale, UT Austin) and companies (Google, Amazon), as well as on the air (Late Night with Seth Meyers, NPR’s Morning Edition). Her bestselling novel was optioned by Hulu and has been published in twelve countries. She is also a film and TV writer (The Baby-Sitters Club) and has written and voiced two non-fiction audio projects: The List (Amazon Originals) and You’ve Already Changed Your Life (Audible). Her journalism and essays have appeared in The NYT Magazine, The WSJ, The Best American Food Writing, and others.

Ann Friedman

Ann is an audio pioneer who co-created the beloved Call Your Girlfriend podcast, and a newsletter innovator whose long-running Ann Friedman Weekly has more than 50,000 devoted readers. She is the co-author (with Aminatou Sow) of the New York Times best-seller Big Friendship, which was featured on The Today Show. For many years, she was a columnist for both The Cut and The Los Angeles Times, and her features have been published in The New Yorker, ELLE, The Guardian, Bon Appétit, and more. She is a contributing editor to The Gentlewoman, where she writes short essays and cover profiles of fascinating women.

The Fine Print

Is my booking refundable? We will refund 60% of your purchase if you cancel before April 10. After that, we’ll only refund you if we are able to find another participant to take your spot.

What’s your Covid policy? We ask that all attendees are fully vaccinated. A majority of our meals and workshop sessions will take place indoors, in a room with high ceilings and open windows. We will not require attendees to wear masks, but we welcome your choice to do so. We ask that you do not attend if you are not feeling well.

Do you offer accessible rooms? Yes, several of the rooms are ADA accessible and so are the common areas of the retreat. If you have interpretation or other accessibility requirements, we will do our very best to make sure you can attend and participate fully. Contact us to discuss.

What if I’ve already taken a Midwives workshop? If you’ve already attended an Ideas Workshop, either in-person or online, you may be wondering what else you’ll get from this retreat. The answer is… a lot! Yes, you will recognize a couple of the elements—for example, we will still be extolling the pleasures of composting and diving into our proven strategies for expanding your idea—but this retreat is far more expansive, designed to help you truly apply our concepts and strategies to your own practice. You will also be exchanging encouragement, inspiration, and deep-thinking with a cohort of like-minded people, and giving yourself dedicated time to really focus on your project. The retreat offers more time, more space, more tools, and more community than our day-long and online workshops.

Will I have an opportunity to get out and about in the Taos area? We’ll be only a 10-minute walk to the trailheads of the Kit Carson National Forest and only 2 miles from the Plaza in downtown Taos. Most of your time will be spoken for with retreat programming, but there will be some opportunities to explore the area.

What’s the wi-fi situation? There will be free wi-fi available throughout the retreat.

More questions? If you have questions about anything at all, feel free to email us! We are happy to address any inquiries!
